bq24190 doesn't charge with every USB wall charger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24190, BQ25890

Bq24190 doesn't charge with every USB wall charger. It charges the battery correctly when connected for example to a Samsung charger. But I found several models available in commerce that don't work with the bq24190. What is the reason? Is it normal?

  • Hi Maria,

This is due to the connections on D+/D- on the USB port. Depending on the D+/D- configuration on the charger's side, the bq24190 will draw more and charge faster (CDP/DCP) or less and charge slower (SDP).

  • Thanks for your answer.

We need that our device charge with any USB wall charger. Is there a solution or some workaround I could do?

  • Maria,

I suggest using the bq25890 for this type of application.

This device can handshake with all available chargers in the market, even 9V and 12V MaxCharge for faster charging. For those wall chargers that are somehow configured as SDP and not DCP, override input current limit to 3.25A and force ICO (Input Current Optimizer) which will find the highest current limit without overloading it. That way you can output possible maximum power from any wall charger.

You can request the full datasheet for bq25890 by clicking the special note on the product's page.

As for bq24190, you can create a loop where input current limit is increased one by one and verify if VINDPM is hit. When VINDPM is hit, reduce one level of input current limit so that you are not hitting that VINDPM threshold. Use VINDPM from 4.44V to 4.60V to stay within USB spec.

    Thanks,
    Steven
