Open Frame Power Supply Design

I need to design a power supply for an Atmel MCU and Atmel Bluetooth chip as well as provide power and control for 4X 130W BLCD motors. My input voltage requirements are 60/50 Hz 110-220 VAC and 24VDC output for the motors and 3VDC for the Atmel chips. Can you point me in the right direction for reference designs that can get me started? The power supply will be close to the MCU so I am looking for a low noise solution.

  • Hello Christian

The TI reference design library - for power supplies - is at www.ti.com/.../refdesignsearchresults.tsp

The TI power supply design seminar papers are a really, really good source of information about all aspects of PSU design - they are at www.ti.com/.../login.shtml
As regards low noise - don't worry too much about the topology or device you choose but DO worry about the component placement and PCB layout - especially that around the high voltage switching stages. It is well worthwhile spending an extra few days to get the PCB layout correct before you 'go to press' with it. As a starting point you probably need a boost PFC of some form - Transition Mode is a good choice at this power level - followed by an LLC stage to down-convert from the 400V output from the boost stage.
