Power path controller- Switching between 3 DC Power Supply Sources

Hi

we are looking for a solution for Power path controller.

We have three DC source

1. DC adapter  5V, 2A

2.  Two wire DC terminal block ( 10V-15V DC, 1A)

3. Non rechargeable battery (4V- 6V ,  4xAA in series)

Scenerio is:

When DC adapter or Two Wire DC terminal block is connected and providing power , Battery path should get disconnected.

Only when both DC adapter and Two wire Dc terminal block are absent Battery should supply the current..

Source Priority should be in below order:

1. Two wire DC terminal block ( 10V-15V DC, 1A),                   2. DC Adapter,                        3.  Battery

Also we are looking if we can get Surge and Over-voltage protection in built.

Output of this Power path controller will be fed to Buck controller to get required 3.3V, 1.5A.

Buck controller spec ( Vin 4V---17V, Vout 3.3V, Iout= 1.5A)

Need your help here to get best suited Power path controller for our design.

Thanks & Regards,

Bhupendar

  • Hi Bhupendar,

Do you still need assistance with finding a power path controller? I will move this thread to the appropriate forum, "Load Switches and Power Path Protection"

    Thanks,
    Alex

  • Hello Bhupender,

     Thanks for your post.

      I got your application information.

Since your power feeding priority is from  higher Voltage to low  Voltage, i.e.- 10- 15V --- 5V    and then  4 - 6V.

The simple  active Oring should be enough in case of 10-15V and 5V sources.

Now I would suggest to study the figure  "Figure 52. Typical Application Schematics: Active ORing Configuration" in the TPS25942 Data sheet.

But in order to OR  5V adapter and battery simple oring would not work, for this you need another configuration  called priority power Muxing   as indicated in "Figure 76. Priority Power Multiplexing Implementation" in the TPS25942 data sheet.

So in short you need Three TPS25942, and out of these three first two (DC terminal Block 10- 15V and 5V ) will be in  simple   active oring and 2nd and 3rd (5V and Battery )  will be  set in priority Muxing mode.

This will solve your problem completely.

Please let me know if you need further support or discussion for this.

    Best Regards

    Dinesh

In this case you would need three TPS25942 to Actively OR three power sources.
