Question on EV2300 and BQ34Z100EVM

I was planning on using theBZ23Z100-G1 to monitor some NiMH calls. The data sheet says that it will support this, but when I go to the EVM page, it states:

"The circuit module includes one bq34z100 integrated circuit (IC) and all other components necessary to monitor and predict capacity in 1 or more series cell Li-ion, Li-polymer, or LiFePO4 battery packs."

and does not list the NiMH chemistry.

Is the BZ34Z100-G1 what I want? And, does the EVM support NiMH?

If the answer to either of these is negative, what alternatives are available?

The gauge does support NiMH cells, but you must have at least a 3S configuration to provide adequate voltage to power the device.

Excuse me if I seem a little thick. By 3S, do you mean three cells in series, or a minimum of 3V? If that's the case, I'd be OK as in this application the debate is three or four cells.

Also, on reviewing the EV2300 and EVM combination, I think I may have the wrong thing in mind. If I want to determine the operating parameters for the selected cells, it looks like I want the GDK and EVM combination. This would be BQ27GDK000EVM and BQ34Z100EVM. Am I right? Would this work? (Using a minimum of three cells, of course.)

Hi Thomas,

In reviewing the EV2300/EVM combination, I think I'm looking at the wrong thing. My interest is in determining the fuel gauge parameters for the BQ34Z100. I think I need to be looking at the GDK instead. So my question becomes: Will the BQ27GDK000EVM work with the BQ34Z100EVM as long as I meet the minimum requirement of three cells in series?

Yes, 3S means three series cells. I have not use the GDK, but it may work with the bq34z100-G1 as long as the stack voltage does not exceed 4.2V. I will check with the guys who work with the GDK.

The tools will need to be updated to support the bq34z100-G1. It is not on the tools roadmap, so we do not plan to support it.

OK. So, how would I go about working on a design based on the BQ2000/BQ34Z100-G1 combination for a NiMH application?

I also forgot to mention that the charger on the GDK may not support NiMH. You can use the bq34z100-G1 EVM and configure it for NiMH. I have had other users run the evaluation and optimization cycle with this setup. I have not used the bq2000, but you should be able to charge the cells with it.

The thing that attracted me to the GDK was that it provided a means to do controlled discharge of the battery system and thus gain further insight to the various parameters. Would you be able to point me to a document or procedure that would point me in the right direction?

I'm OK with the BQ2000 charging cycle. My primary interest is now narrowed down to how can I optimize the BQ34Z100-G1 parameters? A key objective of this exercise was to be able to report an reasonably accurate value for the charge remaining.
