Increased main power consumption by adding RC snubber values to bq24192

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24192

Hi Folks,

We are using battery charge management IC BQ24192RGER in one of my design. We observe that , switching node has around 2.4V overshoot and undershoot.

We tuned snubber RC values on switching node. Overshoot and undershoot has eliminated by tuning the R- 10E and C-10nF.

The problem is that, once we mounted RC values on board, the main power consumption increased by 1W (round 100mA of current consumption). I could not understand , why power consumption is increasing. Please let us know the reason fro it.

Below is the schematic for the battery charger management used in our design for your reference.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Swapna,

Using an RC snubber will add some power dissipation. In order to reduce power dissipation, you can increase resistance or reduce capacitance. But this in turn will add ringing. You will have to make a trade off between overshoot and power dissipation.

Also, I may add that the layout components must be tightly together, capacitors close to package pins and a 4 layer board is recommended. Look at our bq24192 EVM for reference.

    Thanks,
    Steven
