TPS61175 Maximum Input Current

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61175

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding the maximum input current to the IC (through the internal MOSFET). The datasheet states it contains a 3A internal switch, but I think this is a bit vague. The reason why I am saying that is because it is not stated whereas this is maximum average or peak current. This spec is not stated in the absolute maximum ratings section and, in the table of electrical specifications, it says that the 3A current limit is for a duty cycle that is equal to the maximum one. Does it mean that we can have a higher current for a lower duty cycle?
This current limit shows a range from 3 to 5A, which seems a bit too wide for an absolute maximum rating (peak current).

Figure 4 shows the dependency of current limit with duty cycle, but it seems to decay below 60-70% duty cycle, why is that?
Does it really depend on duty cycle or it is a maximum peak current of 3A (and therefore beyond that, even for a spike, the MOSFET breaks)?

Thanks for your support and best regards,

Marcos

TPS61175's maximum peak current limit will changes with the duty. But if your input voltage or output load   change in a certain range, you just need to take care about the minimum peak current limit point which is listed in the datasheet as 3A to ensure normal operation. 3-5A is a MOSFET's peak current limit point range, not the MOSFET's  breakdown range.
