TPS92512 no load temperature

Has anyone noticed how warm the TPS92512 runs with no load attached? I am wondering if it is normal to be 80 degrees C at idle. It is really warming up my entire ground plane....

Are you sure the device isn't damaged? If you power it up with no load the output voltage will rise very quickly and could overshoot and cause damage if you do not have either an OVP circuit included or a schottky from the output to input to protect it. If it's running that hot with an open output damage is the most likely reason. If not I would need a lot more information about the application to see if there could be some other reason. But no, I have run it with an open output and did not see it getting abnormally warm.

One more thought, check the power diode and its voltage rating. It could get damaged by an overshoot just as well as the internal switch could. That would provide a current path and heat the device with no load.

Thanks Clinton. The power diode is rated at 30V and my Vin is 12V.

Hi Clinton. That might be the issue...They didnt have the power diode in the datasheet.

Ill try working hacking in a diode into my circuit and pop a new one in, hopefully that helps.

Yup that was it. I chose to change the output cap to one with a higher voltage rating to deal with that <Vin ringing on startup with no load. I'm not sure how I missed that section on the datasheet. Thanks for the help Clinton.
