TLV62065 Efficiency

Hi,

What is the efficiency  of the TLV62065 at 10uA or less? I am looking for a Buck Converter with 2A output and high efficiency at light loads.

  • What is your Vin range and Vout needed?

    You could measure it on an EVM, but the input current will be at least the Iq, so you can compute a maximum theoretical efficiency from this.

    But the combining of ultra-low current efficiency and higher current loads is odd. Could you share a little more about your application requirements?

    Finally, the TPS62085 is a newer device which has better efficiency at heavier loads, which is likely important to you as well.
  • Vin range is from 3.3V to 5.0V and Vout 3.3V. My application consist of a microcontroller that sends information periodically through a XBee, and spend most of the time sleeping. I need a ultra low current efficiency for the sleeping time, and enough current for transmitting (1.5A at least). I have been read datasheets of several Buck Converter, and found that the efficiency is around 70% for 100uA.

  • 2A sounds like a lot of power for a radio.

    The efficiency at loads under 10 uA is very dependent on the Iq. Here is a paper on Iq: www.ti.com/.../slyt412.pdf

    If you are most concerned about battery life, you could use a TPS62740/3 type device to power just the MCU. Now, you get ~90% efficiency down to 10uA loads due to the ultra-low 360 nA Iq. You then have a separate converter for the XBee. I recommend a device with DCS-Control to power such a load with fast and large transients. TPS82084/5 module or TPS62085 discrete are good ones for this.

    What source do you have that varies from 3.3V to 5V?
  • Yes, 2A is too much for a radio, but I'm thinking a converter for incoming projects. I have a battery charger, and his output depend if an AC/DC converter is connected or not (3.3V is the minimum from the battery and 5.0V is from the AC/DC converter).
