Charge and Discharge FETs are turning off, if BQ wizard trying to communicate with evaluation board

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78PL114, BQWIZARD

Evaluation Kit: BQ78PL114

BQ wizard version: 2.5.7

Firmware version: 5000 (CRC: 0x4104)

I am trying to track charge and discharge current from BQ wizard. But I am facing strange issue. As soon as I open BQ wizard on PC both charge and discharge FETs are turning Off. And I am not able to observe current on BQ wizard.

Following are steps

1)      Connect battery to EVM (28 V)

2)      Connect charger voltage (32 V)

3)      Charge FET is ON, and 500 mAmp charge current

4)      Connect USB to GPIO adapter to kit

5)      Open BQ Wizard

6)      No charge current, No voltage at PACK+ and PACK –

Anybody faced similar issue with BQ Wizard?

Is there any special configuration to allow normal charge/discharge FET operation with BQ wizard?

  • There are numerous safety condition indicators in the bqWizard display.  Please poll data during this condition and find out why the Charge MOSFET is being turned off.

  • Thank you for quick reply...

I checked Safety column and SB data column. There is no red flag. SB data column showing Initialize in green, all other options are in gray. Fuse is in green, all other status bits are in gray.

If there is some safety issue, charge and discharge FETs should be close all the time. It should not depend on BQ wizard's connection to EVM.

Please let me know, if I can check anything else.

  • Are you reading valid cell voltages in the bqWizard?

Toggle the wired bit to "wired".  Then, set each of the top four bits of the algorithm enable register to 1.  This disables the safety rules and turns on all of the FETs.  If this does not turn on the charge FET, there is likely a hardware problem somewhere (EVM or USB Adapter).

I am able to see change in cell voltage and temperature. It is not accurate, because I didn’t calibrate. But I think this is not an issue.

Pump Algorithm bit was gray. I set this bit. Now it is green.

    I tried following steps

    1. Reset all four upper bits of algorithm enable register
    2. Write parameters
    3. Set all four upper bits
    4. Write parameters, upper four bits are green, wired bit is green
    5. Safe disconnect for BQ wizard
    6. Disconnect battery pack
    7. Connect battery pack
    8. Both FETs are on
    9. Start BQ wizard
    10. During “BQ wizard Initialization” screen, both FETs are OFF
    11. No active faults
    12. Valid cell voltage if “POLL Data” is enable

  • Are you saying that both FETs turn off and stay off after step 10 (above)?

The word "Wired" in the status window should be green.  The device is not allowed to operate if it is not told that it is fully connected ("wired") to the battery.  This is done by pressing the F7 key.

The DSG, CHG, PRE pin status is reflected in the bqWizard as green=2.5V on pin and grey=0V on pin.

    DSG Pin = D-FET

    CHG Pin = C-FET

    PRE Pin = P-FET

If there is a mismatch between the voltage levels at the pins and the bqWizard then there is a bug somewhere.  I would first check that.  If a FET is off then a safety rule is telling it to turn off.  Check that no safety rule is active.

  • At end I had resolved issue (Even though I do not know root cause).

Turn ON charge and discharge FET manually

    And than turn off....
