bq78PL116 sequence

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78PL116

Hi Folks,

For bq78PL116 am I right to say that:

(1)    Inputs to LDO1 and LDO2 are (V2-Vss) and (V4-V2) respectively? Because of that V2 got to “on” first (to activate LDO1) before V1 then follow by V4 (to activate LDO2) then V3.

(2)    LDO1 (which supplying the Vcc for the lower side portion) has to be up first prior to application of input voltages next follow by LDO2.

From internal circuitry point of view why BATT+ has to be the final one that kick in? Let say if it was being applied such that –Vss, BATT-, BATT+, V2, V1……… why would that cause problem?

Thanks.

  • How,
The PL116 has three die integrated into an multi-chip module. There are two PL102 cell monitors, which also contain the linear regulators. There is also a gauge die and it communicates with the PL102 devices. The PL102 that is connected to the bottom two cells provides power to the gauge. You need to use the cell connection sequence that we published in the PL116 EVM User's Guide, because there is a possibility that the regulator may not power up properly or the PL102 will not initialize properly, if you do not. Connecting BATT+ last may not be absolutely necessary, but it would be good to do because the gauge may not have control of the CHG and DSG FETs until it is operational.
