Hello,

I'm trying to use TPS3700 as a window comparator (instead of LT6700 from Linear). I've got a question regarding maximum input range. During normal operation, maximum input voltage will be below 5,85 V, so it's included in recommended input range. But during system fault (short circuits in external cabling) input voltage could be as high as 13,7 V, but there is a series resistor of 2,4 kOhm between a connector and IC input pin (so current will be limited to approximately 6 mA). Is it safe to use TPS3700 in such a manner or could it damage the IC?

Hi Jakub,

Per our Absolute Maximum Ratings table, the stress ratings for both INA+ and INB- are a maximum of 7V. Stresses beyond 7V may cause permanent damage to the device.

Thank you, but it was not the essence of my question. I know that quite often ICs manufacturers write in datasheets something like this: "If current is limited to xx mA, going beyond this rating does not damage the IC", so I wondered if it regards TPS3700, i.e., if it still works when I exceed maximum input voltage while limiting the input current to small value (6 mA).

Hi Jakub,

Exceeding the Abs Max voltage alone regardless of limiting the current may damage the device.
