LM4041D vs TL431 difference of internal design

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TL431

VREF of LM4041 is between cathode and FB, however VREF of TL431 is between anode and REF.
I think this is due to the difference of internal circuit. Why do you have this difference?
I would like to know each merit and demerit.

  • Kohei san,

LM4041 has a NPN Emitter output which has a naturally low output impedance which greatly improves loop stability.
TL431 has a NPN Collector output which has has a naturally high output impedance which hurts loop stability.

So when used in a small loop as a simple voltage reference, the LM4041 will be stable with more capacitors than TL431.

Most applications could use either device.
