BQ27621 I2C Communication Problems

Hi,

We've read through all of the issues and answers regarding BQ27621 I2C communication problems. Ours is a bit different.

Our problem is that the chip ignores us completely. We send that first byte (addr, r/w) and it doesn't ACK it.

This is much like the behavior in SHUTDOWN mode, except that we do see 1.8V on the Vdd pin.

And what's baffling is that on some boards this happens and on others the chip does respond and communicates normally. We do have the required delay between I2C transactions. We have an embedded battery application, with a 10K resistor from BIN to gnd, and 10K pullup from GPOUT to VDD.

Please find the application schematic below.

  • Hello,

Help me understand your situation. You have built up multiple boards and on some of these boards the bq27621 communicates fine and on others using the same firmware the bq27621 does not respond.

The fact that the hardware and firmware work in some cases and not is others has me thinking it is a manufacturing/build issue.
Have you tried reflowing the boards that do not respond to make sure the chips is seated properly?
