TPS79901DRVR thermal pad connection

I have a few queries regarding the thermal pad connector TPS79901DRVR SON package.

1) I assume that the thermal pad (EXP_PAD pin-7 in the image) is electrically not connected inside the package.

Is this true?

2) As shown in the image, TPS79901DRVR powers the analog part of the system and I have two grounds in my system

a) DAC_GND

b) GND

DAC_GNd is in signal layer and available as island.

GND is the system ground plane.

Can I connect thermal pad (EXP_PAD pin-7 in the image) to the GND plane as shown above?

Kindly let me know the proper way of handling this issue.

Binupandian S

  • Hi Binupandian,

The thermal pad should be connected to a large ground plane as you show in your schematic. As its name implies, the purpose for this pad is to improve the thermal capabilities of the device. This pad is tied to GND as stated in the Pin Configurations and Functions section of the datasheet.

    Very Respectfully,

  • Hi Ryan,

    Thanks for the reply.

I was worried that connecting GND to the thermal pad might short GND and DAC_GND which we don't want.

From your answer, I understand that this is not be the case.

    Thanks,
