FB protection diode for TPS7A8300 regulator

Hello,

SBAV042 recommends a Schottky diode between FB and GND to protect the FB input from negative voltage when using CFF.  The example references a 10uF capacitor used for CFF.  If a much smaller capacitor, 10nF is used, is a protection diode necessary?

WEBENCH does not include this diode in the circuit it produces for my application.

Regards,

Rob Curtis

  • Hi Rob,

The 10uF capacitor was used as an illustrative example. While a smaller Cff will result in a smaller discharge, the potential of pulling FB negative remains. If in a given application the FB rail is pulled negative beyond the Abs Max limits, external protection is needed.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
