Learning cycle for Bq40z60

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z60, BQSTUDIO, GPCCHEM

Hi Tom ,

Good day...

I am try to use bq40z60 in our battery pack, I had purchase BQ40Z60EVM and EV2300.

I had made set up as per user guide SLUUB71. for 3S1P battery pack with Samsung SDI lithium ion cell i.e. ICR18650-26F.

Kindly provide me  step by step procedure to crate learning cycle.

Regards,

Sachin Ghorse

  • I will work on a short list of steps to help you.
  • Dear Sir ,

Thank you for your quick reply..

We are waiting for your reply...

  • Hi Tom,

    Good day...

We are waiting for your valuable reply..

Also confirm bq40z60 have inbuilt charger ? Is it possible  use bq40z60 EVM  with 5 Amp charge and discharge current.

    Regards,

    Sachin Ghorse

  • Sachin,

I have not had the time to draft a step-by-step list, so here is a general list. Also, the EVM can only support about 2A continuous current.

    • The gauge's default setup is for 3S. Configure the gauge for the proper number of series cells. Most parameters are defined at a cell level, so the number of changes will be minimal.
      • Setup the jumper on the EVM to the proper number of series cells.
      • Update the DA Configuration register for the proper number of series cells.
      • Update the Minimum Voltage Output and Voltage Resolution parameters for the proper number of series cells. (page 13 of the UG.)
      • Update the Termination Voltage for the proper number of series cells.
    • Calibrate the pack using bqStudio. Refer to the EVM User's Guide for guidance.
    • Press the GAUGE_EN button on the Commands panel.
    • Press the FET_EN button on the Commands panel.
    • Try applying a load to the pack and see if it discharges.
    • Press the CHARGER_EN button on the Commands panel.
    • Apply a charging voltage to see if it charges.
    • Try to find your cell part number in the Chemistry table in bqStudio and load the ChemID. If you cannot find the cell part number, then use the GPCCHEM tool to try to find a ChemID. Search for GPCCHEM on the TI website.
    • Run the optimization cycle. Reference this posting for the steps. BE sure to log data at a 2s rate throughout the entire process.

    I hope that this helps.

  • Thank you for your reply...

Due to some other work i am not able to work on it..

But as per your instruction  I had connect bq40z60evm and ev2300 to my PC.

I am trying to create learning cycle for 3s1p pack. I had finsh below step

    1) Voltage calibration ,

    2) Chem ID selection.

but i am confused during updating DA configuration register  ( Please confirm   Data memory is same as DA configuration register).

Which parameter is for cell and which parameter for battery pack..

Calibration  : Is for cell or battery pack

    Setting : ??

Protection : Should i Update this section  as per cell value or battery pack value ???

Permanent fail : Should i Update this section  as per cell value or battery pack value ???

Advance charge algorithm:Should i Update this section  as per cell value or battery pack value ???

Gas gauging :Should i Update this section  as per cell value or battery pack value ???

for more details please see attached image .

    Please help in this regards..

    Regards,

    Sachin Ghorse

  • Most parameters are set at the cell level. There are a few exceptions.

    Minimum Voltage Output
    Termination Voltage
    ACOV Threshold and Recovery
    Design Voltage

I do not think that I missed any, but let me know if you have a concern.
  • Dear Tom ,

    Thank you for your reply..

As per your dictation i had try to program EVMbq40z60 as per following process.

    1) I had connect EVM and EV2300 as per User Guide SLUUB71.

    2) I had done dump default  firmware , voltage calibration and update chem id from data base (Use Samsung ICR18650-26H).

    3) I had set jumper at 3 cell configuration.

    4) Set protection value as per cell and battery configuration.

    5) Send Gauge_EN command.

    I had observe..

    1) Discharge process start , but RDIS flag is in green color i.e. 0  and VOK flag is in red color i.e. 1. How it is possible ? As per my knowledge  during discharge process RDIS flag should be set i.e.1.

    2) During discharge process i observe remaining battery capacity is zero but , discharging process going on.

    3) I had try to charge the battery but charging in not enabled

for more details here i had attached log file and screenshot.

  • RDIS should be green and VOK should be red after you issue an GAUGE_EN. Can you export an srec and attach it? I can check to see why the pack will not charge.
  • Dear Tom ,

    Good day...

We occurred below mention error during damp default SREC file , please find attached image for reference.

Kindly help as early as possible

  • Please verify that the gauge is not sealed. This is usually the reason that it will not enter ROM mode. The SEC1 and SEC0 flags should be set like this if it is unsealed and in full access mode.

  • Dear TOM,

    Thank you for your reply...

Now EVM is ready to program.

Is it possible to use bq40z60evm as charger ?? if yes then send me procedure and setting  for charger.

I had tried but not successful  to charge the battery.

    Awaiting your prompt reply...

    Regarsd,

    Sachin

  • Please send your latest srec file, so that I can check the charger setup.
