BQStudio and Learning phase

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, EV2400

My goal is to use the BQ27421 and BQStudio to characterize several batteries and create a "golden image" to eventually program the chip in our design.

BQStudio has a lot of capability but apparently no central document to describe its use.

I completed the Parameter Q&A and intended to start the learning function manually.  Following are questions I have regarding this process and BQStudio use:

1) A support member sent me a powerpoint presentation on a "deepdive" on BQStudio.  It showed a window in Windows/Settings/Registers that allowed you to set Conditions to Start Charge (or Discharge).  I don't see these options in my setup.

2) This window would activate the "EV2300 I2CSDA/HDQ line HIGH (and I2C Vout = LOW)" upon set check conditions.  But what is I2CSDA/HDQ?  The HDQ port only has VCC/HDQ/VOUT/GND pins.

3) After completion of a manual discharge, the software goes into Relax state.  The only way I found to get out of it was to pull the USB cable to the pc. Then it says I can go into Charge phase.  Is there a better way?

4) Upon then starting charge phase, the Data Graph shows the battery voltage rising but the I had selected Average Current and State of Charge and they are bogus (-11666 and 0%). Why?

More to come I'm sure....

  • Hello Barry,

#1: Make sure you are using the GDK here and not an EV2300 or EV2400.
#2: I'm not sure what you mean. I2C has SCL and SDA and GND. HDQ is a two wire communications protocol.
#3: Are you using the golden cycle plug-in? When you pull the USB cable from the PC you are also losing communications.
#4: What does the registers tab say? Are you using the EVM User's Guide when you are doing your experiments?
  • Hello Kang,

It was you I spoke with earlier and sent me the power point presentation.  The EV2300 is supposed to be supported by BQStudio.  Apparently it is not then. The questions mainly center around using it and not the GDK as I didn't have that.

I have since obtained the GDK but am equally confused and dissatisfied with the documentation. I have posted another thread on this.  Basically this thread can advise your customers not to expect the EV2300 to work with BQS and we can move to the other thread to discuss the use of the GDK with BQS.
