For a customer, we are integrating a LED system in an existing product. The LED system is a 24V SELV circuit (behind an AC-to-DC power supply with appropriate certification). In addition to lightning, the integrated systems should provide USB charging capabilities (in order to charge consumer products like smartphones, tablets, etc). I intend to use a step-down-converter (24V to 5V) in combination with an USB power and charging port controller (both from TI).
Now, I have a couple of questions regarding compliance and certification with respect to the USB charger.
- All safety related considerations should be covered by the AC-to-DC power supply (with appropriate certification), right?
- To place the USB logo next to the plug, the product must pass compliance testing and be on the Integrators list under that company's name (according to usb.org). This also applies to a “simple” USB charger, right?
- Is certification required at all to sell a USB charger which is used in a SELV circuit?
- Are there any advantages to certify such an USB charger?
