Find Chem ID and programming bq34z100-G1 for Lead crystal batteries.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100-G1, GPCRA0, BQ34Z100, BQSTUDIO, EV2400, BQPRODUCTION

Hi.

We use the bq34z100-G1 to monitor a block of two 6cell Lead crystal batteries (24V 22Ah).

To start with, I used Chem ID from another leas - acid battery in the database: ID 0804. - tried to get all parameters right for my battery.

Our next steps: Measure a charge - discharge cycle at c/10 and upload it to TI as described in "Gauging Parameter Calculator: Match chemistry for Impedance Track gauges"
With the right ID we'll measure another cycle at a high rate and upload it again as described in SLUUBC9 "Simple Guide to GPC Golden GG Maker Tool"

Am I right with this procedure so far?

What happends, If I disconnect the battery from the controller and reconnect it or replace it with a new one?
Will it get back on track after a few cycles or do we have to reset any register in such a case?

Best

Rolf

  • If your gauge has updated the Ra table and Qmax, then I would export an srec file to save the configuration. You can then import it when you get ready to use this battery again. But, to answer your question, the gauge should recover as long as you are using the same model battery.

Yes, you will run a higher discharge rate profile to use with the GPCRa0 tool.
  • As the batteries will be changed in the field and we'd like to keep the effort for our service tecnitian small, I think, we have to live with some error for the first cycles.
Is there any register, we can set / reset to tell the bq34z100 that there's a new battery installed?

Another question: to export the .gg.csv file from bqstudio, do I need the Gauge Development Kit (GDK) plugin, or is there another methode?

For programming the bq34z100, we plan to take the bqstudio, which is allright for the low batch sizes of our product.
We have two EV2400 interfaces and the Production Tool for 4th Generation Multicell Battery Fuel (Gas) Gauges v1.0.8 is not working with this interface.

Is there any possibility to turn off the "I2C to HDQ" button in the bqstudio?

  • We do not have a register to tell the gauge that the battery was swapped. But, it will continue to update Qmax and the Ra table automatically as the pack is used.

You can export a gg.csv file from the Data Memory screen in bqStudio.

The EV2400 currently does not work with bqProduction.

We cannot remove the button from the screen. Are you concerned that someone may press it accidentally? Is so, they have to go through two more buttons and a warning before the interface is switched to HDQ.

  • Our typical current profile will be:
Patient setup with hihger peaks up to 13A for max. 20s - tranining with pulsing current average around 2A for 45min.
What discharge rate do you recommend in this case for the  to use with the GPCRa0 tool?

  • I would determine what the overall average current will be and use that with a constant discharge current.
  • The data from the Impedance Track Parameters tool, has two invalid parameters:

The Battery Management Studio does not accept these two parameters, so for a start, I set them back to the original values from my device:

    Gas Gauging,State,T Rise,20,Num
    Gas Gauging,State,T Time Constant,1000,Num

This way I can program my device.

So far the results are looking good, SOC still does some smaller steps, when I give the battery a rest.

I can send you the gg.csv file from the Parameters tool, as the results of my discharge test.
