TPS40422 capabilities and questions

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS40422, CSD87350Q5D

We are using the TPS40422 as a two phase 60A power supply.  On the web site for the part it states 60A max but in the datasheet I see 50A max.  Also, there is a register for each phase that reads the current output.  I assume that is for each phase and you sum them?  Is the current limit set for both phases or just one?

  • HI Dan,

The current rating is more determined by the power block, not controlller. Which power block are you using?

The current readout and current limit is for one phase.

    Thanks

  • Thanks Qian.

    I am using CSD87350Q5D.

Interesting what you say about the current readout.  I must not understand how to use this feature.  We are running in the dual phase configuration so I set the Page register to control both phases.  I set the IOUT_CAL_GAIN(0x38) to the DCR of the inductor (320mOhms or 0x88 0x0a).  We have connected a digital load to power output with no other parts on the board.  I set the load to 10A but I read about 13A on both phases.  Maybe I am expecting more accuracy than this was design for??

  • The current readout of TPS40422 should be accurate. Are you using TI FUSION or other tool to read current?

Can you use multimeter (portable multimeter using battery is prefered) to measure the voltage between CSP and CSN to see if the voltage is equal to I*DCR?

    Thanks
