BQ24232 / Way to detect RISET left open

Hi,

Please give your advice to detect ISET pin left open due to soldering failure. I confirmed that the charging is disabled when ISET pin is left open, but then the status of /GOOD pin shows Low (Power is good) and /CHG pin shows Low (Charging) and also bq24232 is in discharge mode. So we can't know ISET pin left open condition from status output.

Can you give me you advice to detect this failed condition simply?

Sonoki,

I was able to verify your issue on an EVM. Even with ILIM floating, the CHG pin indicates charge. The charge current is zero.

I am meeting with design to determine a way to identify a non-charging condition.

For clarity, I repeated the testing with the ISET pin floating. The CHG pin is low as well.

The exact specification for the CHG pin is meant to indicate Charge is NOT COMPLETE. In both of the ISET and ILIM cases, the current is limited by the resistance on each pin. Since both are floating, the current is limited to 0mA.

Hi Dick,

Thank you for your comment. I understand you mean that we can check ISET pin floating by monitoring both CHG pin status and charge current externally (It will be 0mA at floating). Is my understanding correct?

Sonoki,

If the ISET pin is floating and it would normally be a charging state, the CHG pin will be active (Low). Same for ILIM.

The charge current will be 0mA if either ISET or ILIM are floating.
