1200W PFC with UCC28061

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28061, UCC28070, UCC28180, UCC28063

I need to design a PFC circuit for 1200W high intensity discharge light ballast, with 400VDC output.

I have seen UCC28061 used, but the datasheet suggests that UCC28061 not used for loads over 750W. Exactly why is UCC28061 not ideal for loads over 750W?

Would UCC28070 be a better choice?

Ideally, the PFC would operate between 120-277VAC. Other than making sure passive components can handle the extra volts, is there anything I can do to get these PFC IC's to handle 277VAC input?

  • Hi Cameron,

For higher power we recommend the CCM boost topology. It is possible to use single stage PFC boost up to 1kW using the UCC28180, the interleaved approach offers a benefit in terms of reduced ripple currents on the input and output stage and the UCC28070 is the controller for CCM interleaved applications.

Operation up to 277Vac should be ok once there is enough head room between the PFC bus voltage and peak of ac mains, typically the but voltage is 390V for a 265Vacrms mx AC supply, about 15V. so for 277Vac the PFC bus should be in the region of 405 to 410 Vdc.

  • Hello Peter,

Thank you for the reply. I am just trying to understand PFC control better - Exactly why, other than it isn't CCM, is UCC28061 a bad choice for >1000W PFC?

I like the EMI reducing features of UCC28061, but to get those features in a high power controller, I think I should be using UCC28070. If you have another recommendation, please let me know!

    Thank You,

    Cameron

  • Hi Cameron,

At higher powers the CCM approach provides better efficiency and more compact design that the TM approach, there is no other drawback to the UCC28061, although we do have a newer version available which is the UCC28063.

The UCC28070 is the a good choice for interelaved CCM control at 1kW but take a look at this UCC28180 single phase 900W refrence design, www.ti.com/.../TIDA-00443
