bq24770 questions

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24770

We are using the bq24770 NVDC (SMBus) Battery Charger to charge our Smart Battery Pack (3-Cell Li-ion Pack with SMBus V1.1 Compliant Gas Gauge).

1) I'm concerned that the bq24770 has only a simplified implementation of the SMBus V1.1 specification. Is there a reason only select commands were implemented? What is the impact of not having a 100% SMBus V1.1 Smart Charger?

2) Most of the Battery Chargers I have worked with monitor the Battery Temperature using a Thermistor. The bq24770 does not seem to have this functionality. Is there another way for the bq24770 to monitor the battery pack temp? If not why was this not implemented? I would think this is an important safety feature.

Thank you for your help!

Regards,

Dave

  • 1. TI charger’s register function is compatible with smart battery specification, such as 0x12(), 0x14() and 0x15().  Such compatibility has been well accepted by market through several generations of battery charger solution. So far, we don't get any bq2477x SMbus issue.

    2. bq2477x is a host control charger. So, the host controller monitors the battery pack temp and send command to charger. In the battery pack, one temp sensing resister can't be connected to both gauge/host IC and charger IC. So, ba2477x doesn't have temp sensing.
