BQ76920 Cell Balancing

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76920, BQ76930

Hi TI Experts,

I'm currently using BQ76920 for my battery charger system.

I'm using 4S configuration. For BQ76920, datasheet mentioned that it has cell balancing feature.

May i know is there any configuration needed for the cell balancing?

Is there any cell balancing algorithm??

Please advice.

Thanks,

Br,

Wang

  • Hi Wang,

When it comes to the bq76920, you can balance up to 50mA with internal balancing or provide an external balancing circuit for more balancing current, with the higher cell devices (bq76930/940) we recommend external balancing circuits for this. As far as the algorithm the host controller is where we leave this to be done by the system designer. I don’t believe we have any sample code on how the algorithm should look like, but we have some design recommendations. If you look at page 27 in the ds it will tell you what you need to enable and the registers to control the balancing, and if you look at the tech doc that is titled “bq769x0 Family Top 10 Design Considerations”  on pg 7 we give hints on how to best do this. Usually you balance just in charging. Hope this helps.

  • Wang,
    refer to registers CELLBAL1, CELLBAL2, CELLBAL3.
word of caution (1) *adjacent* cells should NOT be balanced simultaneously. (2) multiple cells can be simultaneously balanced.
