[TPS659037] Triple PHASE SMPS mode

Guru 24520 points

Hi TI Experts,

Please let me confirm the following questions.

[Question.1]
The OTP is set this module as dual and single phase mode. Now customer think that the PMIC of SMPS1,2,3 used as "Triple Phase SMPS mode". Can they change the operation from single/dual phase mode to triple phase mode?

[Question.2]
If change the mode and connect the SMPS3 to SMPS12, the output voltage of SMPS3(1.5V or 1.35V) will face the SMPS12(1.15V). i.e it will leak current from 1.5V line to 1.35V line. Is this understanding correct?

[Question.3]
If they adjust the output voltage of SMPS3, they should change the constant of C, R and L. Is my understanding correct? Or they can change the output voltage by resister of PMIC?

If you have any questions, please let me know.
Best regards.

  • Hello Kaka,

    [Question.1]
The OTP is set this module as dual and single phase mode. Now customer think that the PMIC of SMPS1,2,3 used as "Triple Phase SMPS mode". Can they change the operation from single/dual phase mode to triple phase mode?

[Karl] The customer cannot change this, it is only programmed by OTP.

    [Question.2]
If change the mode and connect the SMPS3 to SMPS12, the output voltage of SMPS3(1.5V or 1.35V) will face the SMPS12(1.15V). i.e it will leak current from 1.5V line to 1.35V line. Is this understanding correct?

[Karl] Because it's programmed in OTP (and not configurable through I2C), each unit will be either triple-phase or dual-phase. If triple-phase, SMPS1/2/3 should all be connected together to form one output and they will have the same output voltage. In this case, SMPS3_VOLTAGE register has no function, and SMPS123 will regulate to the SMPS12_VOLTAGE register.

    [Question.3]
If they adjust the output voltage of SMPS3, they should change the constant of C, R and L. Is my understanding correct? Or they can change the output voltage by resister of PMIC?

[Karl] SMPS3 voltage should only be set by SMPS3_VOLTAGE register. Changing L or C on the output will not affect the voltage, but could affect the loop stability.

    Regards,
    Karl
  • Hi Karl,

Thank you for your comments. I will inform this to my customer.
If I will get more questions, please let me confirm them.

    Best reagrds.
