Dual PWM forward converter

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28220, LM5032, UCC25600, UCC28221, UCC24610, UCC24630

Hello Sir,

I need to design a 5V/120A power supply.

Input is standard 230 VAC.

But I have height restrictions, So I thought about splitting POWER of 5V/60A.

But control of this both should be in same IC So that paralleling 5V/60A to get 5V/120A we be easy.

Now after search I have found two devices which may solve my problem but I need verification from your site.

I have chosen LM5032 and UCC28220.

And willing to go for 2 transistor forward converter.

Please Let me know whether I am wrong or write to go ahead.

  • Hi Mahesh, I guess the first question is whether your application needs PFC? For this kind of power level, a Boost PFC followed by and LLC is the most commonly used topology at the moment. The UCC25600 contoller could be used for the LLC, you can have a look at the 300W reference design at www.ti.com/.../ucc25600evm.

A two switch forward would also work. The UCC28220 has a mathcad design calculator on it's tools and software webpage which may help you with the design.

There is also a paper on a 200W interleaved forward design based onthe UCC28221 available here www.ti.com/lit/an/slua312/slua312.pdf. It is a single switch but could be modified.

There is also a 200W interleaved flyback reference design available for the LM5032 here, www.ti.com/.../TIDA-00200

    Hope this helps.
    Thanks

  • Sir,

Thank you for your valuable reply.

Following are my needs for design.

    1. I don't need PFC boost because it will add restriction for line frequency change. Line frequency will change from 50-400Hz.

    2. I have already worked on 2-transistor forward converter with 24V/30A rating.which works great and rugged design.

But for this design size restrictions are there so that I thought of DUAL PWM CONVERTER.

Your suggestion of ucc28221 is very good and helpful to me.

    I thing I will go for UCC28220/28221.

Additional thing I want is synchronous rectification on secondary, So i need suggestion for this?

Once again thank you for your reply.

  • I'm not sure which diode you're looking to replace with an SR.

I'd suggest the UCC24610 for the forward diode. You'll need to put the diode in the return leg.

For the freewheeling diode the UCC24630 would be my suggested option.

    Thanks

    Billy

  • I need to replace both forward as well as freewheeling diode to be replace with SR.
So is their any single IC which will solve my issue.
