TPS73201 DBVR

Hello ,

I have a Engineering/ technical question in regards to the TPS73201 DBVR Low Dropout regulator .

At present we have a design here that uses this chip to charge a ML2430-CJ1 lithium Ion cell battery in circuit, in the end device.

My question is;

Can you describe if we could use this TPS73201 or similar chip to 'pre charge' a number of the ML2430-CJ1 Lithium Ion batteries before we install these batteries in actual units? In other words we would like to build up a que of pre charged batteries and then place them in the end devices.

Would like to charge them to 2.95 to 3.1 Volts and that is what the present circuit topology does for a 1x only ( in circuit).

Thanks much and if any additional information or questions I can give you just let me know.

Below is  additional contact information for me as well.

  • Hi Kirk,

    An LDO can be used to charge a large capacitance (or battery); however, it is important to understand that in doing so, you will be running the device primarily in current limit. Continually running an LDO in current limit degrades the lifespan of the device.

    TI has a line of products specifically designed to charge Li-Ion batteries. Perhaps one of these is better suited for your application. Please see the below link to the battery charger products:

  • Thanks for the response Ryan,
    We will also look into the additional charger products you point to in the msg below as well.
    If I understand correctly then it is OK to charge a small number of Lithium Ion cells from one TPS73201 DBVR as long as we understand the current limit and that it will degrade the lifespan.
    Is the circuit topology used to charge 1 cell the same for a number of cells then? In other words , from output of charge IC thru a diode and resistor to the cell being charged?( 1 resistor in series with each cell? Thinking of a total of 5 cells per the TPS73201 DBVR device if that sounds acceptable?
  • Hi Kirk,

    We do not have much information regarding such an application with an LDO as the Battery Charger ICs are made specifically for such applications.  We do have an App Note that may help you with your configuration:

    Very Respectfully,
