BQ27542 Flashing Golden Image, Capacity Misreporting

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

I generated a golden image a few weeks ago which we have been using for a few units. Lately we've been noticing misreporting of battery capacity. I did a little reading and my mistake may have been not using the Execute FW button after flashing the golden image. Can someone explain what this button does and if it would be the cause of my problem? It seemed like the registers updated when the image was loaded so I didn't think twice about the other button.

Additionally does every board need voltage temperature and current calibration or does that information carry over in the image?

Thank You

-Tyler Barkin

  • Hello Tyler,

To program a golden image the gauge must be placed in ROM mode, bqStudio does this in the background when you click Program. The Execute FW button forces the gauge to exit ROM mode once the new golden image is programmed so it enters firmware mode and starts executing normal operation.

Regarding calibration data, this information is carried over in the golden image. Customers have the options to either arrange calibration of each pack during production or take calibration data of 20-30 packs and use the average for the golden image.

    Thanks.
  • What would happen if I powered off the BQ27542 without clicking Execute FW. When I restore power shouldnt it come up in FW mode and start executing what was flashed?
  • Hello Tyler,

The device should return to FW mode after POR, but we have seen instances where the part may remain in ROM mode after programming the image, so it is recommended to send the command sequences to exit ROM mode and enter FW mode.
