Hi Guys,

I am using a TPS54620 bulk converter on my design. I have attached the schematic below. The question is, when I hook up 12V at the input, there's a ~9mA drawing from my supply while output is not loaded. The output voltage is correct, 1.5V.

If the output voltage is correct, what is the question? 9 mA input current seems reasonable or a no load condition.

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply.

Is this no load high current due to low efficiency when the output has no loading? 9mA at input with 12V is quite high. How could I modify my schematic so that I dont want to see this 9mA in no-load conditions? ( I still will have input at 12V)

The TPS54620 does not have a power save mode, so it draws quite some power at light loads.

You might look at the TPS62184 which has a power save mode and much lower Iq. It is much smaller as well.

9 mA is about what I expect. Even at no load, the IC is switching and you will have switching losses that cause the efficiency to be quite low (near zero). The only way to avert that is to disable switching, but then you have no output voltage either.
