BQ20Z45-R1 firmware referenced in TI Analog Applications Journal article "Improved LiFePO4 cell balancing in battery-backup systems with an Impedance Track™ fuel gauge" (slyt528)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ20Z45-R1, BQ40Z50-R1

Hi,

I just read the TI AAJ article "Improved LiFePO4 cell balancing in battery-backup systems with an Impedance Track™ fuel gauge" (slyt528).  The article was very interesting and is relevant to my 4S LiFePO4 battery pack application.  Similar to the article, my pack will undergo shallow discharge cycles with a maximum discharge rate in the order of 0.02C.

How would I go about getting the firmware referenced in the article or how would I setup my pack per the article using the factory default firmware?

GG IC: BQ20Z45-R1

Factory Firmware: 1.05

Cell Chemistry ID: 0439 (AA Portable LFP-18650-1500)

Cell Configuration: 4 series

Sincerely,

Doug Young

  • Hi Dough,
The version 7.02 is a typo I think in the article. The latest version is 1.05 for the bq20z45-R1.
Are you committed to using the bq20z45-R1, or is this a new design, in which case the bq40z50-R1 might be a better choice.
Please let me know, I can assist with the settings.
    Regards,
    Swami
  • Hi Swami,
Unfortunately we started this project before the bq20z50-R1 was available and are now have units in the field. In the short term we need to be able to optimize use of the bq20z45-R1.

I would appreciate help to setup the IC for a 4 series LiFePO4 cells similar to the AAJ article.

Should the revised settings help the bq20z45-R1 get to an update status of 0x0E, thus enabling cell balancing? We have had mixed results getting to that update status.

    Sincerely,
    Doug Young
