Can TPS54541 be connected in parallel to get 10A output current?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54541, TPS54620

We are using a TPS54541 on a card to convert to 12V. We are expanding the card's capability and will draw more current. Can we double up two TPS54541 in parallel to get 10A output current? If so, is there a reference design schematic available?

  • Generally, it is possible, but not recommended. There is no direct way to ensure equal current sharing. The output current is related to the COMP pin voltage. The rate of change is specified by the parameter GMPS (17 A/V for TPS54541), but the absolute COMP pin voltage for a particular output current is not tightly controlled. We did a reference design for a similar device, TPS54620:

It is really more of an academic study than a practical solution. We have found that the implementation is very sensitive to pcb layout. You could build up a prototype to see.
