BQ34Z100-G1 discharge only with SOC remains 0%

Hello,
I use the BQ34Z100-G1 with a lead battery 12V 20AH.
I want to use the BQ34Z100 only discharge, recharging will be done outside. (Normaly it's possible: https://e2e.ti.com/support/power_management/battery_management/f/180/t/452275

I did some tests on BQ34Z100EVM with BqStudio, but for now I can not get State Of Charge different from 0%!

I have set VOLSEL to 1,and  I calibrated the tension.

I have set RTMFCC to 1 like this thread e2e.ti.com/.../351364

I have updated the firmware
I have updated chemistry with ID = 0802 

How do I make when I connect a battery, BQ34Z100 provide me the SOC?

PS: I tried to charge the battery with a current of 12mA, but the SOC remains at 0%!

  • For SOC to work you need to charge via the BQ34z100g1 as well. How will the bq know how much energy you put into the battery if the bq is not in connected to the battery.  That is you need to track the performance of the battery over it's life.

    And I have used for another project, a simple voltage and Temperature read to determine the SOC on LiPo battery, and the result are good.

    But now I use Lead Acid battery, with a bigger capacity and I search to have a very good estimation of the SOC...

  • Just curious if you had done a reset (0x0041) after you connected the battery to the fuel gauge?
  • I did not know that. Still have much to learn around this chip.
  • Also after reset, you have to enter the command 0x0021 to enable Impedance Tracking.

    I have been out of the office for a few days, so let me clarify a few items on this posting. The gauge will run and FCC simulation when you reset the device. This includes resetting by attaching the cells or with the reset command. The FCC simulation will estimate the capacities and SOC based on how the cell voltages compare to the OCV curve in the device. An IT Enable command does not have to be issued after a reset to enable IT. The reset will clear the DOD point, so an IT Enable will set a new point or you can allow the pack to reset to allow it to set a new DOD point. A DOD point will be required to allow Qmax to update after the next discharge. Now to the SOC= 0%. Your screenshot shows that RM and FCC are both 0. This usually indicates that the Termination Voltage is set too high. The default value is 3000mV for this device and this is too high for a PbA cell. Make sure that the Cell Term V is set properly and that the pack is calibrated.

  • The gauge calculates Qmax by taking the difference in the two DOD points (before and after charge or discharge) and dividing it by the Passed Charge. The DOD point is set after the cell voltages stabilize during the rest period. The FIRSTDOD flag is set in the Flags B register, so you have a valid DOD point set. Qmax can only update after discharge with PbA cells and the voltage floats up a lot, so I doubt that you will be able to get enough change in DOD by starting a discharge at 61% SOC. You should charge the pack to full and allow it to rest until the OCVTAKEN flag gets set and then discharge it to the TERM V and let it rest for the update.
