bq76940EVM unable to connect to BQ78350 with EV2300

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, BQ76920, BQ76940EVM, BQ76930, BQ76940, BQ78350, BQ78350-R1, EV2400

I am unable to communicate with the bq76940EVM using bqStudio. I am able to use the bq76940/bq76930/bq76920 Evaluation Software.

A little history. I was able to communicate with the bq76940EVM using bqStudio at one time but out of the blue it no longer works.

Could the BQ78350 chip be defective? Is there a way to test this chip to see if it is working?

  • If the REGOUT level out of the bq76940 is OK ( powering the bq78350) , the chances are the issue is with bq78350. Since you are using the EV2300, when using the bqstudio and bq78350, you are using the SMB connection and not the i2C.
  • Correct when i use the bqstidio i use smb, i am not able to comunicate with the bq78350. So should i check the regout signal when connect to the i2c? And if i have a level out then it is moat likely a defective bq78350?
  • I am measuring 2.5 volts on the regout pin of the bq76940 to the Vcc pin on the bq78350.
  • With 2.5V the gauge would have power and it seems you are connecting the SMB interface.  The bq78350 could be in ROM mode or could be damaged.  You might search on the gauge forum for solutions. Common approaches may be to send command 08 to return to normal mode or to re-program the part, but the gauge experts may have better advice.

  • Michael,
make sure the bq78350-R1 is selected as the micro in the bq when using EV2300.
  • Thanks Vish,

    That does not work.

I think the bq78350 has failed.

  • Hi Michael,

If you go to the bq78350-R1 product folder you can download the latest firmware and using the users guide for either the 78350 or the 77940EVM you can upgrade the firmware using bqStudio. I think also make sure that you are using the latest software for bqStudio.

Keep in mind that the EV2300 is known to not always work on all computers, i think a bug was reported on some computers. If you can, try moving to the EV2400 as it is the newest part. If you can't can you use a computer with windows XP? XP works well with EV2300 for the most part.

  • Good day Miguel,

Thanks for the extremely late response.
As I have stated previously I was able to communicate with the bq76940EVM using bqStudio at one time but out of the blue it stopped working.

The EV2300 worked just fine and from the documentation the EV2400 does not work with the bq76940EVM this is why I purchased the EV2300.

Per TI website: "Important Note Due to a temporary driver incompatibility issue with the EV2400, the EV2300 EVM is currently required to install the bq78350 firmware SREC on to this EVM."

Also per TI website the bq76940EVM does not have the bq78350-R1 chip it has the bq78350.

Again I am able to connect to the bq76940EVM using the I2C connection but I am no longer abler to use the SMB connection.

I have already sent this board back for warranty.

I would also like to say that going through the e2e forum to troubleshoot parts is a pain. It takes forever for the issue to be resolved.

I am constantly repeating my self over the details of the problem every time a new TI Employee decides to right a post without reading the prior comments.

TI should reconsider this approach to customer care.
