BQ40Z60 on host-side

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z60, BQ24610

Can BQ40Z60 be used on the system-side?  I am under the impression that this is a pack-side device.  As such, I thought pack-side devices were designed to stay with the battery for the life of the battery.  On the system-side, the fuel-gauge is designed to determine the state of charge on a newly inserted battery.  Since BQ40Z60 uses the Impedance Track algorithm, it seems this part should be capable of being used on the system-side.  I would like to confirm this case as well as understand any issues that may arise as a result.  The reason I ask is that I have a customer wanting to use this device because it is a low cost integrated device, but his application is a system-side application.

  • The bq40z60 was designed as a pack-side gauge to be connected to one set of cells for the life of the pack. The gauge can learn a different set of cells, but limits are placed on Qmax and Ra table updates that prevent them from changing too much in a cycle. So, it may take several cycles to learn a new set of cells.
  • Ignacio,

What device did your customer decide to use in this design?  If you wish to send the block diagram and design requirements, we could assist with selecting the proper device.

  • Per my suggestion, I directed them to use the BQ24610 for the reason that it is a stand-alone system-side device that is very easy to use and will need little to no support from TI. My experience with TI support Battery Chargers and fuel gauges is that the response on the E2E is spotty meaning slow to no response. Even on this issue, it took a week and several escalations to get an answer to the first posted question. It's nice that you are offering to help and review a block diagram, but this issue started 17 days prior and customers don't wait that long. Decisions on this project have already been made. As far as the fuel gauge, they are using a competitor.
