PFC controller selection

Hi,

I am new to the PFC controller. I found that for 100W applications, Critical conduction mode controller is best suitable. Also i beleive that Continuous conduction mode controller also can be used. Can any one tell me which mode will give me better efficiency (that is low power losses) ir-respective of the power factor performance?

  • The benefits of criticalconduction PFC is the boost switch will only turn on when the boost inductor is at zero current.  This means that there is no reverse recovery current in the boost diode.  No reverse recovery current in the boost diode means no boost diode switching losses due to reverse recovery current, which leads to higher efficiency when using fast recovery boost diodes.  This is a popular PFC topology for 100W applications.
