BQ51050BEVM / BQ500210EVM - not transferring 400mW of power across?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ500210, BQ500212A

Hi,

A customer of ours recently evaluated the following EVMs with a TDK coil for a wireless charging application that requires Qi compliance:

BQ51050BEVM – Qi receiver

BQ500212AEVM – Qi charger

BQ500210EVM – Transmitter

WR221230-36M8-G – TDK coil

https://product.tdk.com/info/en/catalog/datasheets/wr_rx-coil-wr221230-36m8-g_en.pdf

Some preliminary testing with the BQ51050BEVM (Qi receiver) and the BQ500212AEVM (Qi charger) with TDK coil proves that it is able to transfer 400mW of power across a 1mm with a lateral offset of 5mm from the centre of the coils, which is a good result. However, the BQ500210EVM transmitter is unable to deliver 400mW of power to the BQ51050BEVM with the TDK Coil. Customer suspects this is due to the Tx coil inductance being much higher (A1 type, 24uH) in the older style transmitter (BQ500210EVM). Could you please confirm this is true or some other issues that need to be addressed?

Thank you.

  • Deejay,

The bq500210 is a WPC v1.0 transmitter and the bq500212A is a WPC v1.1 transmitter.  We recommend the v1.1 transmitters for new product.  This is especially true if Qi certification is of interest.

There are a number of reasons the bq500212A is a better solution than the bq500210, including the coil differences.  The bq500212A runs from a 5V supply giving it the ability to run from a USB port (versus 19V for the bq500210).

If you need more information, let me know.
