Is external thermistor on TS1 pin of BQ78z100 required ?

The temperature sensed by the thermistor is used in the gauging algorithm. It is possible it use a gauge without a temperature senser, but it is not recommended. Another option is, if the gauge is close enough to the battery, you can configure the bq78z100 to read the temperature of the die by selecting the data memory button in bqStudio, and then clicking on "Settings," which can be found on the left hand side. Click on temperature enable, and let bit 0 = 1 (it will turn red) and bit 1 =0. Then, click write to data memory.
