Recommended device for battery pack

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z60, BQ27510-G3, BQ27510

Hello everyone,

I'm working on a portable device powered by protected cells 18650. Our goal is that the final user can replace the cells. I've been checking TI products for Battery Fuel Gauge aimed to battery pack solutions but I'm not sure if I can use one to them for this purpose. In this case, the battery manager would not be embedded into the pack because there is not pack so the IC and associated components would be part of the "system".

Could one of the TI products fit this requirement?
Should I take into account any special consideration if I use a TI device?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Thanks you everyone for your help!
  • Hi Jose,

Is your application only a single-stack (i.e., 1S) design, or do you have multiple cells in series? I assume these are Li-ion? Assuming a 1S configuration, given your design is system-side (as opposed to pack-side), you can consider the bq27520.

    Thanks,

    Terry
  • Hello Terry,

I have 3 cells in series. They are Li-Ion. I found the  bq40z60 and I think it is a good candidate because it includes  all what I need on a single chip. What do you think?

    Thanks a lot,

    Jose

  • Hi Jose,

The bq40z60 is not directly designed to support system-side gauging, which is what you are requesting. The gauge will update the battery chemistry information during use, and so when you replace the cell with another, it would be starting with parameters learned from the previous cell. One approach would be for your host processor to detect whenever a cell has been changed and to rewrite the data flash to start gauging afresh each time. Unfortunately, I don't believe any of our other multicell gauges will support this much better, so this may be your best option.

    Thanks,

    Terry
  • Hello Terry,

I got it, so what is your personal opinion about cells are user replaceable? Is it not a recommended practice? I found this device: bq27510-G3 but it is for single cell applications. Is there something similar for multi-cell solutions?

    Thanks for your help!
  • Hi Jose,

This is pretty uncommon in multicell from what I've seen. We don't have a similar device like bq27510 for multicell that can accommodate this easily, so I think your best option will be re-initializing the gauge each time cells are changed.

    Thanks,

    Terry
  • Thank you so much Terry. I appreciate your help!
