Why doesn't BQ27200 recommend for new design?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27200, BQ27542-G1, BQSTUDIO

Hi.

I've tried to make battery monitoring system using BQ27200.

but, I don't know why it doesn't work.

I saw this IC doesn't recommend for new design in datasheet.

Does that mean this IC doesn't work on new design, or it doesn't work well??

Please help me :(

Thanks.

  • Hi Chiheon,

Not Recommended for New Design (NRND) means that all of the features of the bq27200 will still work completely fine, but TI has released models that are newer and have improvements when compared to the bq27200. If there is a specific issue that you think may be causing you trouble, I would gladly be able to help you out with that.

After I read your reply and some documents, I decide to change fuel gauge IC to BQ27542-G1.

I have some questions about BQ27542-G1.

    1. is it working on Li-polymer Battery? I know this chip works on Li-ion battery, but I didn't see anything about Li-polymer battery in datasheet.

    2. Does this IC always connect with battery? I designed a circuit that battery + is connected with BQ27542-G1 only when system power switch is on (Battery - is always connected with BQ27542-G1). Is it correct??

    3. I saw that to use BQ27542-G1 , it is needed for BQ27542-G1 to set up battery's ChemID and etc, and this procedure only can conduct using software 'BQSTUDIO' with EVM board. I have plan to make the system more than 1000 unit. If so, do I have to do that procedure at all each product using BQSTUDIO and EVM board? and how can I get all learning result from EVM board and implant it on my chip?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Chiheon,

    1. I would recommend that you do a relax-discharge-relax cycle and upload the results to the GPC tool to see if there is a good match for the battery you wish to use. The steps to do this are outlined here: www.ti.com/.../slva725.pdf

    2. The BQ27542-G1 should always be connected to the battery. To provide accurate gauging of the battery, the BQ27542-G1 needs to be connected to the battery at all times.

    3. You should do a learning cycle using the EVM and use the result of the learning cycle to produce a golden image that can be loaded onto the other 1000 units. You should use bqStudio to do this. The steps to perform a learning cycle can be found in the following document under "How a Learning Cycle Works": www.ti.com/.../slua597.pdf
