multiple power inputs on bq24650

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650

Hello!

good day from Colombia. I would like to have some information about the battery management systems offered by you, my punctual question is: is it possible to use 2 different kinds of power inputs using a chip like the "bq24650"?. In the project we are working it is needed to have a module able to charge a 1 cell lipo battery using a solar panel or a 12 VDC input. I'm not deeply related with the solar harvesting topic and i wanted to know if there's a way to use a MPPT function chip like the "bq24650" to do that.

Thanks

  • Hi,

The MPPSET works like VINDPM, meaning that it will modify input current in order to maintain voltage at that level. For solar panel, you want to use its maximum power point voltage for MPPSET. For 12VDC input, you should use a voltage that is acceptable by the power supply, like 11V for example. If both solar panel and 12VDC have different settings, you may need to use a switch to modify the resistors based on the input power currently being used. Connect resistors in parallel with a FET in series to change resistor values. To switch between the solar panel and 12VDC you can use a load switch.

    Regards,
    Steven
  • thanks for you answer.

so, let me see i've gotten it right. if i want to have the possibility for my system to accept both inputs, i must set a different MPPSET voltage for each of them, 18 V for my 21 V panel and 11 V for my 12 VDC input and these configurations should work deppending on the power supply, did i get it right?
  • Yes you are correct.
