UCC28070 / Shunt Resistor

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28070

Hi,

My customer is considering to use the PFC IC for the first time.

And they refer the following circuit.

The current transformer is used on this circuit.

Can they also use the shunt resistor?

If it is no, could you tell me the reason?

Best Regards,

Kuramochi

  • Hi, I've forwarded the post to one of our application engineers for comment. He can comment on the sense resistor.
  • Hello Kuramochi,
For the UCC28070 the expectation in the application is that the power level will be high, and using current sense resistors may be more power dissipation than acceptable, compared to using the current transformers.
I think shunt resistors can be used, but review the parameter for the CS input thresholds to determine if the resistor value and power dissipation will be acceptable.
  • Hello Kuramochi,

This is a common question found in other E2E posts, just search for Shunt Resistor UCC28070.

There has been some attempts to use OP-AMPs, etc. but to my knowledge nothing has been successful. Look at the specific E2E post titled "UCC28070: Current sensing with the resistor instead of current trans" and you will see ideas with reasons why this should not be done. Stick to a current transformer..
