Battery detection with a dead battery

We are using the comparator in the TPS65721 for battery detection and it works reliably unless the battery is completely dead. When it is dead, the comparator always returns a 1 to indicate it is below the threshold and never recovers, therefore making it appear to be detached. My question is, should I only check the comparator register if the battery is not in the pre-charge state? I am wondering if the battery test is not reliable while in the pre-charge state which is where it should be when completely dead after being plugged in. Also, is there any way to control when the battery detection test is done?

  • In your scenario does the battery voltage recover? As in do you ever have an event when the comparator returns a 1 when the battery voltage is above the threshold?

You can disable the comparator via I2C. See Internal Battery Voltage Comparator section in the datasheet for more details.
