BQ51013b coil detection problem

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ51013B, TIDA-00425

Dear TI Team,

I have implemented wireless power receiver section using BQ51013B in our wearable device . Being a wearable device I used 10mm receiver coil 760308101208 from wurth.

when i was testing its feature using Samsung charging dock of Qi compliant, I was able to see only starting communication but not power transmission.

I suspected the working of BQ51013B and connected the receiver coil used on the mobile and it was working fine and able to see the 5V output.

Is that the 10mm dia coil was not be able to receive the power transmitted from this bigger transmitter dock.

I cannot rely only on the recommended transmitter dock prescribed by TI, as it being a wearable device I need to provide support to get it charged by any available Qi complaint transmission dock.

Please let me know where I was missing and how to resolve it.

Regards,

Kishore.

  • Kishore,

It will be very difficult to get the 10mm coil working with all Qi transmitters.  The 10mm coil is simply not big enough to capture the magnetic field being transferred from the TX.  We have several non-Qi solutions using smaller TX coils (TIDA-00334 and TIDA-00425 for examplet) and the 10mm is still very difficult for power transfer.  It will certainly not be able to deliver 5W.

Even if you can get it working on a specific setup, your efficiency is likely to be quite small.

  • Thanks for your Valuable reply.

We are not looking for 5W of power receiver, but hardly around 500mW to charge a 100mAH battery.

So it seems only solution available to us is to use the the wireless transmitter  of (TIDA-00334).

As TIDA-00334 being a non-Qi solution, will it work straight away with our receiver coil designed with BQ51013B. Please clarify, so that we will procure it and give a try.

Out of curiosity, Is it possible that if I change the standard coil with this TX coil used in the above design to any commercial Qi Compliant Tx Dock available in market will it work with some play around?.

    Regards,

    Kishore.

  • Kishore,

I have not tested using a coil that does not match the Qi requirements in a commercial Qi compliant transmitter.

Matching the coil characteristics (inductance, ESR) may work.  I would not expect it to be plug and play, but with some effort, you may get the solution you are looking for.
