Have some EM1401EVM questions for E-bus application.

Dear Sirs:

I have some EM1401EVM questions.

Please see these questions below.

Thank you so much.

Aplication is e-Bus active battery balance.

Battery Configuration is 3.3V 110Sesries that total battery voltage is 420V.

Q1: For first of EM1401EVM that can sustain 420V battery voltage? Because I need to series some of EM1401EVM on E-Bus battery pack.

Q2: EM1401EVM CAN bus protocol? CAN2.0A, CAN2.0B or CAN open?

Q3: Do I buy VScom USB to CAN ISO 420 to connect PC with EM1401EVM?

Q4: We see the picture below, PC must have CAN bus interface to link EM1401EVM CAN, and VScom USB to CAN 420 is at digital isolator and Ping out, right?

  • Hi Lucas,

Here are some answers to your questions:

    1. The isolation of the EM1401EVM is tested to 3.25kV, so a max working voltage of up to 1300V is possible, well beyond you needs.
    2. The EM1401EVM uses CAN2.0B (29-bit addressing), and uses a subset of the J1939 protocol. I have attached the CAN protocol document.
    3. The BMSView GUI requires the use of the VScom CAN adapter, however, if you are using some other client software to send CAN commands, then any CAN adapter can be used.
    4. The VS com adapter only provides the connection from the PC USB port to the EM1401EVM CAN interface. If you host controller has CAN already, the the VS com adapter is not required.EM1401 CAN Protocol.pdf

  • Dear Stephen:

Thanks for your reply and inforamtion.

We will try auto battery balance function of EM1401 EVM on E-Bus battery pack.

    Thank you so much.

  • Hi Stephen,

If I understand correctly, you are saying that in order to use the BMSView GUI then the VS-Com model 420 USB CAN adapter must be used. The problem however is that I cannot seem to find it available anywhere to order. Do you know where I can order it or if an alternative adapter can be used instead?
