Complete Getting Started Guide for bqStudio and bq40z60

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z60, BQSTUDIO

I have a bq40z60 in my circuit. I was been able to get bqStudio connected to my in circuit bq40z60 following the getting started in the EVM documentation. This seems to be where the "Getting Started" stops. I haven't been able to find a good guide on how to set-up all of the important registers correctly besides going down the entire list / reference manual which is too large of a document to make sure all of the important parts aren't missed.

Is there something like this available?

A) For instance, there were a few things that were not initially obvious:

  1. AC needs to be connected for bq40z60 to turn on and communicate over SMBus
  2. Default configuration of 3S and how to change
  3. If no TS input is configured as a "Cell", device reports temp of -273.2C

B) Some things I still do not understand, in particular relating to the Learning feature:

  1. Which settings should I configure before "learning"? Which are changed by "learning"?
  2. How does the learning sequence work? I'm trying to follow the "Manual Mode" instructions but I have no idea how long this will take, no indication of what load I should put on, and no indication of what's going on with the charger. Any details for this would be greatly appreciated. I think I've looked at all of the related datasheets but there are so many it's possible I missed it.
  3. I found that the DSG FET and CHG FET outputs did not automatically turn on in learning mode. Why? Is there some global flag that sets manual FET control? A warning about that would go a long way.
    1. I had to send the CHG_FET_TOGGLE and DSG_FET_TOGGLE to enable the outputs. Is this the correct way to do this?
  4. I can set the "Data Memory" values with bqStudio but cannot figure out how to control the "Registers". For instance, my reading suggests that I want to turn on "ChgM" in "Battery Mode (high)". Is there some small button that I'm not seeing?
  5. It is not apparent to me how to check the chip's current firmware version.

I've found other threads here with other people having issues getting their bq40z60 up and running but never found any real definitive place for all the answers.
