max output cap for TPS70628

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS706

hi all,

we want to replace the NCP698SQ28 on a project, but output cap is 1500uF

is this a problem for stability, since in datasheet it is stated max output cap = 47uF?

do we have curves of the stability tunnel (ESR vs Cap)?

thanks a lot in advance

KR

Vincenzo

  • Hi Vincenzo,

Per the Input and Output Capacitor Considerations section of the datasheet, the maximum capacitance for stability is 47uF.  Please note that this limitation is on the output capacitance only.  Moving some of the bulk capacitor to the input will still provide filtering for the rail while not having an impact on the feedback loop stability.

While the "tunnel of death" curves are no longer common place throughout the industry, we again state the ESR considerations in the Capacitor section of the datasheet.  For TPS706, ESR should be between 0 and 0.2 Ohm.

    Very Respectfully,

    Ryan
