bq40z50EVM

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50, BQSTUDIO, BQ40Z50-R1

Hi,

I have purchased the EVM for the BQ40z50. In it mentions that for simulation purposes the rechargeable cells may be replaced with resistors. There is no guidelines on what value resistors is suitable. Anyone can help on this?

Also is there anybody who can put me in touch with some example SMBus firmware?

Thank you.

  • Section 2.1 of the EVM User's Guide states that 1 kohm resistors can be used for the cell simulator. I do not have any sample firmware to provide. Can you use the bqStudio tool to communicate with the device?

  • Hi Thomas,

Thanks for that. Another question you may know the answer to is do you know what the SMBus slave address of this is?

    Thanks

    Abdul.

  • The programmed SMBus address is 16, but it can be changed on the bq40z50-R1. Reference page 88 of the TRM.
  • Hi,

Thank you again. I have another problem. I am now trying to use the BQSTUDIO via the EV2300 to evaluate the device via the SMBUS. But the BQSTUDIO is not detecting the device so on launch I am forced to select device from a list. I selected the device only to get the message that the device is not supported! Any ideas?

I'm not having much luck with this so far!

    Thank you.
  • Did you press the WAKE button after applying power to the device? I recommend using the EVM User's Guide to help with setting up and communicating with the device. You should be successful when using the steps in that document.
  • Hi Thomas,

Thanks again for the reply. I think I did go step by step through the user guide.

    I have done this:

    1) three 1k resistors between 1n and 3p.
    2) short between 3p and 4p
    3) 10.6V applied between 1n and 4p
    4) 1k resistor between pack+ and pack- (this is not suggested in the guide, is this ok?)
    5) EV2300 drivers installed and connected to bq40z50 eval board
    6) power applied and wake button pressed within a couple of seconds - don't see any visible sign of life (i.e. leds)
    7) BQstudio launched but cannot detect anything at start up
    8) In BQStudio I manually select the device but message says that the device is not supported
    9) Went ahead with it anyway and BQstudio shows that it has connected to the EV2300 but "No acknowledge from device" message for the BQ40z50.

Any other ideas I could try.

    Thanks

    Abdul.
