Some questions about TPS2546

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2546

Hi team,

You know the TPS2546 can be set to CDP or DCP or SDP MODE through SEL1/2/3. And you know the CDP and SCP also have their own current limit by regulation.

 So i want to ask:

1. Can I set the CDP with SEL 1/2/3 for fixed voltage not the I/O of MCU? If yes, when the load is a SDP device, how the chip will work for the data and current limit threshold?

2. if I set the current limit of CDP mode is 2A with resister. Will the chip limit the current to 1.5A for the BC1.2?

3.So if the mode is CDP and the resister current limit is2A. When connect a SDP device, will the chip limit the current to 0.5A for the BC1.2?

  • 1. Can I set the CDP with SEL 1/2/3 for fixed voltage not the I/O of MCU? If yes, when the load is a SDP device, how the chip will work for the data and current limit threshold? <EBW> If you only require a static setting (CDP or SDP or DCP) then the CTLx + ILIM_SEL pins can be fixed with pullup or pulldown. If your application will need to change this setting based on system state (ie, sleep or operating or battery only) then some control device such as an MCU can change the select pins.

    2. if I set the current limit of CDP mode is 2A with resister. Will the chip limit the current to 1.5A for the BC1.2? <EBW> The mode setting (ie, CDP) applies the D+/D- detection of the PD. For CDP mode, you want to set current limit to 1.5A minimum using the ILIM_HI pin. If you choose the resistor for 2A according to the datasheet EQ's TPS2546 will regulate/limit at 2A.

3.So if the mode is CDP and the resister current limit is2A. When connect a SDP device, will the chip limit the current to 0.5A for the BC1.2? <EBW> In CDP mode, the current limit is set by the ILIM_HI resistor (ie 2A).

Note that it is the PD that must regulate it's own charging current based on what type of port (CDP, SDP, etc.) is detected. The host port must set it's own current limit so that it can provide the advertised mode current (ie 1.5A for CDP or 0.5A for USB 2.0 SDP).

  • Hi Eric,

    Thank you.

So can we set the CTLx + ILIM_SEL pins can be fixed with pullup or pulldown to do the function below?

    1. The output have no voltage, but when the PD plug in and communicate with each other. The output can have voltage.

    2. Can we do the sleep mode with CTLX fixed?

Can I think the CDP can be compatible with SDP? So can I set the device in CDP mode?

What's the device's sell point? Maybe the customers can just use a load switch to replace it. Thank you.
