tps7a4xxx: maximum operating temperature

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS7A4001

Hi,

We are considering the use of the TPS7A4001 in an application where the junction temperature might be about 140°C. The maximum operating virtual junction temperature in the datasheet is 125°C. Howxever, the storage temperature is 150°C and moreover there is a thermal protection which is triggered for a junction temperature greater than 170°C and this thermal protection is removed below 150°C (section 7.3.3 of the datasheet). We would need clarifications regarding the use of the device over temperature. If the device is operated with a junction temperature of 140°C will it meet its specification and operate as expected although the lifetime of the part might be impacted? How come the thermal protection triggers at 170°C, 20°C higher than the maximum storage temperature?

  • Hi JF,

The Electrical Characteristics table specifications are valid for the stated temperature range of Tj = -40 to 125C. This is the region for which the device was designed, characterized and tested. The specifications stated may or may not be met when operating outside of this temperature range. Operation beyond the recommended conditions (including temperature) may degrade device performance and reliability.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
