TPS70950 Floating Ground

I have a customer who is using a TPS70950DBVR LDO in one of their battery packs.  In their DFMEA is a condition where the GND pin of this LDO is left open.  Do we have data that indicates what will happen if the GND pin is left floating?  Is there some other high-impedance path to ground the IC will find?  Is there any way a voltage on VCC could result from a floating ground?  Any information provided would be helpful.

Thanks, John Garrett, AFA

  • Hi John,

All internal voltages are measured with respect to the voltage on the GND pin. If a proper GND connection is not made, the output could appear as if it is floating. Due to the fact that an LDO will not generate a higher voltage on OUT than IN, Vout will still be limited by the input power supply. As such Vout could be any voltage between the input supply ground and Vin without a proper ground connection of the LDO.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
